Relational- & Eating Design

By designing happenings in the form of participatory installations, I want people to interact with each other and thus establish new relationships.
These informal happenings are often linked to dining, where conversation is of great importance.
I try to subtly steer this conversation through the actions provoked by the installation itself. The communal act that the participants must undergo provokes questions about our dependency and proximity.
Relational design is preoccupied with design's effects, extending beyond the form of the design object and its attendant meanings and cultural symbolism. It is concerned with performance or use, not as the natural result of some intended functionality but rather in the realm of behavior and uncontrollable consequences.”

Welkom in Vlasselt 'Welcome to Vlasselt' explores how we can restore the lost elements of the flax industry. Over a period of six months, we aim to undertake all the steps that were traditionally taken to transform flax into linen. By placing these steps in a contemporary context, we hope to broaden the participants' perspective regarding their appreciation of textiles, the benefits of natural materials, and the connection with the community. Together with the people of Hasselt, we sow flax in the neighborhoods of Kapermolen, Hollands Veld, Katarina Wijk, Heilig Hart, Runkst, and in the backyards of those interested. We create our own tools to process the flax, and we weave in the streets of the Hasselt city center. The project concludes with a grand celebration at a long table, adorned with our linen end result. Together with Stef Lemmens - Nomad City.
